Understanding Dog Body Language: What Your Pup Is Really Telling You

Post Image
Dogs communicate primarily through body language—not barks. Learning to read their signals helps you better understand and respond to their emotions. Here are key signs to watch for: Tail Wags – Not all wags mean happiness. A slow wag or low tail can signal uncertainty or submission. Ear Position – Ears up and forward show alertness; pinned back may indicate fear or stress. Yawning – Often a sign of anxiety or discomfort, not just tiredness. Lip Licking – If not around food, it can suggest nervousness or appeasement. Whale Eyes – Seeing the whites of their eyes can mean your dog is feeling threatened. Raised Hackles – Spiked fur on the back means arousal—could be fear, aggression, or excitement. Play Bow – Front legs down, rear up is an invitation to play and a positive signal. Paw Lifting – Common in breeds like pointers, but can also show uncertainty or curiosity. Freezing – A stiff body and lack of movement is a warning sign; your dog may feel unsafe. Overall Body Posture – Loose and wiggly is happy; stiff and tense can mean caution or stress. 👉 Tip: Always observe the full body and context—no single sign should be judged in isolation.
